The CREDiT Project is delivering innovative, community-centred clean energy solutions across Kenya, Malawi, and Zambia. Funded through the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Ayrton Challenge Programme, CREDiT combines renewable energy, digital technology, and local participation to create reliable, affordable, and scalable energy systems for rural communities.

Working through a multi-country consortium of universities, industry partners, NGOs, and local communities, the project addresses some of the biggest barriers to rural electrification — including unreliable infrastructure, limited maintenance capacity, high costs, and weak governance systems.

At the heart of CREDiT is a practical and sustainable approach built around three core pillars: community-led design, intelligent digital monitoring through Digital Twin technology, and flexible Energy-as-a-Service business models. Together, these innovations support locally owned solar mini-grids that are designed to be financially viable, technically resilient, and capable of delivering long-term social and economic impact.

By combining research excellence with real-world implementation, CREDiT aims to develop scalable models that strengthen livelihoods, improve resilience, and expand access to clean energy across Sub-Saharan Africa.
